“Although both shock and stress are almost always initially ignored, they become hidden detriments that lead directly to deadly cascades of failure when unaddressed…” - Part 1
As a complement to the introduction in part 1, here’s a deeper explanation that truly shows the mirrored progression of shock and chronic stress:

Shock (Cardiogenic)
Part 2: Decompensation
As in the case of compensated shock, where energy and signals are diverted to prioritize blood flow to vital organs—including the brain, heart, and lungs—under a drained state of chronic stress, you unconsciously redirect your energy towards grades, productivity, and performance and away from sleep, recovery, and relationships. Although these conditions include compensatory acts—such as a faster heart rate in shock and overthinking, multitasking, and rushing in chronic stress—both seem efficient and perfectly healthy.
This false state of apparent normalcy is due to the facade of a normal blood pressure in compensated shock and a standard external appearance throughout stress. In the presence of a doctor, a patient in the first stage of shock appears stable. Similarly, in the presence of parents, peers, and advisors, one would continue to achieve top grades, meet deadlines, and maintain discipline under chronic stress. However, as the body becomes depleted, it also becomes less deceptive.
In shock, it is soon clear that “non-vital” body parts lack blood as evidenced by symptoms of cold hands and pale skin because your body has directed all blood flow towards vital organs. In chronic stress, you will soon slowly lose your curiosity and detach socially and emotionally because you have focused all of your resources on performance.
Then, the condition worsens.
Every headline satisfies an opinion. Except ours.
Remember when the news was about what happened, not how to feel about it? 1440's Daily Digest is bringing that back. Every morning, they sift through 100+ sources to deliver a concise, unbiased briefing — no pundits, no paywalls, no politics. Just the facts, all in five minutes. For free.
Just as symptoms of confusion, unresponsiveness, and a weak pulse manifest as cells shift into less efficient metabolism and produce insufficient energy in decompensated shock, panic, guilt, and fear overtake clarity, balance, and intrinsic motivation for function due to psychological exhaustion and overwhelming anxiety in chronic stress.
Eventually, the body succumbs to the immense pressure. In irreversible shock, the body enters Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome, and lung failure leads to kidney failure followed by cardiovascular and brain failure leading to coma or death. Similarly, a high-achiever who initially appeared disciplined suddenly cannot focus and completely crashes—emotionally and academically. Regardless of one’s innate desire to care, they are burnt out, completely depleted and stuck in what is equivalent to a shock coma.
Unaddressed, this is the real progression of chronic stress. To truly convince you of the severity of stress, let’s see this process in action:
Men Age Differently. Most Find Out Too Late.

It started with a forgotten textbook and a racing heart: the small, sharp sting of a deadline creeping too close. At first, Maya leaned into the pressure, treating stress like a compensatory source to power through late-night study sessions.
However, chronic stress doesn't leave when an exam is finished. Within two months, her energy was drained, replaced by a persistent, heavy exhaustion. Maya could no longer sleep sufficiently; she would lie awake for hours while her mind looped through an endless checklist of academic anxieties, only to wake up feeling unrefreshed. The constant flood of cortisol in her body began to take a physical toll; tension headaches became a daily fixture, and a knot of nausea settled in her stomach before every class.
The most frustrating shift, though, was cognitive. The stress Maya had relied on to stay sharp was now destroying her focus. Brain fog made simple readings feel like a foreign language, and her concentration shattered. She found herself staring at the words on tests, completely unable to recall information she had studied the night before. Isolation followed as she withdrew from friends to reclaim more study time, unaware that she was cutting off her primary support system.
Ultimately, what began as a drive to succeed had slowly eroded her health, focus, and joy.
